The Prancing Pony Podcast is a long-running book club and lore discussion podcast centered around the life, work, and ideas of J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings trilogy and other works set in “Middle Earth”).
I’ve been a Tolkien fanatic for 25+ years. I’ve read, and re-read, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and the notoriously dense The Silmarillion. I was the first in line to read The Children of Húrin when the Tolkien estate released it in 2007. And I am one of the crazy few to be able to truthfully claim I have sat through a one-day movie marathon of all three of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films…extended editions, of course.
All this is to say that I thought my knowledge of Tolkien’s imagined world was about as sturdy as a Dwarven King’s Hall, so I never expected to find a podcast like this one with both a sense of fun and a strong sense of community that would bring my knowledge of the author’s work and ideas to the next level, yet here it is!
Every time I have listened the hosts have been able to use research and discussion to unearth yet more fascinating insights. Additionally, the hosts have tremendous chemistry and do a wonderful job bringing the passages they read to life. Hard to believe they only met in recent years, you’d swear they grew up in The Shire together.
Highly recommended, both on the shores of this Middle Earth and beyond unto the green hills of the Undying Lands and Evermore...
