The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz: Podcast Review

November 10, 2019

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz is a sports talk radio show on ESPN that pokes fun at the seriousness of sports-talk. The show includes a winning combination of unique and silly personalities based out of Miami. The "shipping container filled with frightened refugees", as the show's host Dan Le Batard affectionately calls his crew, provide a steady dose of self-deprecating humour that poetically coincides with Miami's mediocrity across all sports in the post-Lebron James era. At the very least, Miami has one successful team in The Dan Le Batard Show.

The radio show spans four hours and includes all types of guests, in and out of the sports realm. Much of what the team does is entertain through brilliant segments, grand storytelling, cultural and social commentary, and genuine chemistry. They work harmoniously together and feed off one another.

There are so many reasons to listen to this show. Some standout recurring bits include:

  1. The Miami Herald’s Greg Cote with a “Back in My Day” segment every Tuesday, where he pines about things like pocket change and pencils.
  2. Greg Cote versus the "Hard Network Out" where the rest of the show sets him up to be cut off by commercial at the end of each hour.
  3. Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill taking calls and talking wildlife.
  4. “Limited Fake” impersonations of Dr. Phil, DMX, Elon Musk, Charles Barkley, and even Billy Zane from Titanic.

I can’t review this show without shouting out Jon "Stugotz" Weiner, who’s "Personal Record Book" and "Weekend Observations" is a look at sports news through the mind of a brilliantly narcissistic co-host. If you need a new podcast to start listening to, do yourself a favour and join Dan Le Batard’s marching band to nowhere.
